They don't mention 'blue' because the color is given as a number. Change (or add)
the line
Idl*background
in either .Xdefaults or in /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Idl. For example,
Idl*background: #bfbfbfbfbfbf
gives cool-looking chiseled (sp?) steel look.

PS. You may need to run xrdb or restart X-windows to make changes take effect.
