It sounds like a graphics card/hardware issue of some sort. I have seen
similar problems on my machine unrelated to IDL, but I would usually have to
reboot to resolve them. What sort of machine/graphics card do you have?

I doubt its a graphics card issue (unless I'm doubly unlucky). I
experienced the problem with my "old" graphics card (a 4MB AGP card that
came with my Gateway Pentium II - 233 MHz machine. I can't remember the
brand, but I know it was NOT an ATI!) My new card is a GeForce with 32
MB ram and the problem still exists. I am running IDL 5.3.1 with 128 MB
ram so I doubt its a memory problem either.
