Has anyone done a comparison of the relative strengths and
weaknesses of the HDF, CDF, and netCDF file formats, looking
at such things as read/write speed, limitations on number and
types of variables, size efficiency, bugs, tricks, lessons
learned, etc?

We currently use a variety of proprietary and somewhat rigid file
formats and need to go to a more standard and flexible format to
support future requirements. We think the above formats are likely
candidates but we need to be able to support files with thousands
of variables with tens of thousands of data points efficiently both
in terms of processing time and disk space.

Any information you could share with us would be most helpful and
appreciated.
