I'm wondering if anyone has or knows of an IDL package or program
that will deal with FITS files, a la IRAF (astronomy). Please
email me off-list if so. Thanks much!

Thanks everyone who replied! I was looking specifically for
IRAF-related routines but that may not be completely necessary.

A number of IDL tools for reading FITS files are
available at the IDL astronomy site and there
is even a discussion of the options. See

http://idlastro.gsfc.nasa.gov/fitsio.html

I'm rather partial to MRDFITS myself -- but I'm not an unbiased
observer...
