Richard, your hunch is correct. IDL does not currently function with
16-bit color, period. She can test this for herself by using the
"xdpyinfo" command and looking for the following indications of 16-bit
color:

...
depth 16, bits_per_pixel 16, scanline_pad 32
...
depths (1): 16
...

Her only choice is to change color modes to 8- 24- or 32-bit color,
which requires some mucking about in the XF86Config file under Linux.
[ In this application 32-bit and 24-bit are essentially the same. ]
