Dear Craig,
I do not very often search by the google search or your archive. I
normally
spent a few minutes per day reading this newsgroup articles and
sometimes
I am able to help someone. The most interesting things I have stored
to a local mail folder. The oldest one is from David Fanning followed by
Phil Williams in 1996. In the past and till now I have stored these
mails myself because I am not sure if deja or google will stay alive all
the time I plan working with idl.
Someone else who is not regulary reading this famous newsgroup or an
idl beginners needs each help he or she can get. If someone has a
problem
he or she can search a big library of questions and answers and I
believe
a lot of people are interested in reading archives.
As David did preparing requests into tips is very useful for all of us.
This is the right way to organize an archive but it takes a lot of time.
And this is the answer of your question too.
I will not demand that's you have to organize your archive in this way
until I am myself are able to do the same.
best wishes
Reimar

I would say (Check!). If you are using idlde you can use idl macros.
I have some written e.g. export_html,%s,name=%_'%s%_'

Ahh... Thanks for pointing this out.. Gave me a chance to go back to the
"really old days", and I found an old "IDL wish list" I wrote in 1995 (along
the lines of the "top ten wishes for IDL in the next release"):
1. Pointers that work like *real* pointers (Check!)
2. A coherent way of deciding the result dimensions in indexed operations
(nope!)
3. Possibility of Macros (nope!)
4. Possibility of having widget applications + command line available
at the same time (like the help facility) (check - well, almost, they
don't work without retalls)
5. Different brackets for array subscripts and function calls (check!)
6. A portable pseudo-language to produce true *compiled* subroutines
(nope)
So, 2 1/2 out of 6 isn't that bad.. David, do you do recycling?

My favorite is my Ctrl-Shift-X, to execute a selected line of code:
ignoredResult = Execute("%s")
I know, IDLWAVE-Shell users have had this and much more for years! Recall
that I'm the one *still* trying to get a command-line IDL for Windows so I
can use IDLWAVE-Shell... %^\

Craig,
either way you decide, i wanted to just let you know your
archive really saved me during the time between google
buying deja and taking down the archives to when they put
the archives back up again. i was really glad that you had
an independent archive that we could access. thanks!
best,
