Let me just note that there is a third alternative. IMSL and RSI have
jointly developed a product called IMSL/IDL. Basically we have
given IDL mathematical capabilities by integrating IMSL's C/Math/Library
into IDL. This is a seamless integration. In other words, the new
functions are used just like any other IDL command. No re-linking
or calling external programs is required.
The areas covered in IMSL/IDL include interpolation, quadrature,
differential equations, multi-dimensional FFTs, nonlinear equations,
optimization, linear systems, eigensystem analysis, special functions,
statistics, etc.
You can reach IMSL at (713) 242-6776.
Disclaimer: Yes, I'm an IMSL employee.
