Is there a way to use Insight from IDL 5.4? RSI no longer distributes it
due to the LZW patent. But I have older versions of IDL (5.3 and
previous). Reason is that I'm trying to use a set of procedures that
relies on insight, but these modules obviously won't run under 5.4. Any
solution other than to reinstall older IDL and run under that?

It's possible to have the current version and older versions of IDL installed
on the same computer simultaneously. I often use this, to make sure my
software will work on older versions, and most recently to get around some of
the limitations of version 5.4 for batch jobs.
