Unfortunately IDL for Windows is rather unreliable under OS/2 2.1. (I am
now using IDL 3.1 because 3.5.1 would crash with a GPF whenever I swithced
away from it while a program was running.) Neither RSI nor VNI are considering
a port to OS/2 - in fact the RSI guy said that the OD/2 market wasn't there,
a surprising statement considering that an NT version is out and OS/2 has
sold more than 5 000 000 copies to NT's 300 000 or so. I have been considering
trying to get another more intuitive GUI oriented program anyway and this
just provides more impetus for me to try to find one (I have heard
excellent things about SAS under OS/2). I would encourage
anyone using IDL or PV-WAVE under OS/2 to contact either or both companies
and request a port. Maybe if there is enough interest they will reconsider
their respective decisions.
