I've been running IDL 5.4 on Windows 2000 for several
months now with nary a problem.

Was this a fresh install of Windows 2000, or an upgrade
from another OS? I've never had much success with Windows
upgrades. :-(

Cheers,

David

It is a brand spanking new Dell Inspiron 8100 1.13Ghz with 512M of Ram,
and Windows 2000 preinstalled. Our computer guys updated all the software
on it.

Thanks for all the responses. It is reassuring to know that IDL does run
in win2000 stabley ... uh stabelly.... uh..... run in win2000 well.

I've received some new and weird IDL errors, "array descriptor is corrupted"
a couple of times, and .com allows IDL to continue (i.e. the array
descriptor
apparently is no longer corrupt). I'm leaning towards a hardware problem
for instance, the CPU is melting. Oh, my teapot just whistled (it is
sitting on
my laptop, wow that came to boiling fast!).

thanks!

This is exactly what I am told. I did upgrade W98 to W2Kpro, but
existing applications don't want to alwayr run properly unless users
have Admin priviliges. I never was able to track down which exact
permissions are lacking for non-Admin users to just run stuff.
I talked to my sysadmin at work, and he said that evey single Windows
upgraded system he had required a reformat-reinstall eventually.

Cheers,
Pavel

P.S. I actually never was able to license my IDL 5.4 on W2K. The key I
was given has nothing in common with what IDL wants to see entered. Oh
well. I have other machines that run IDL, so I figured maybe it is for
the better if I don't have IDL on my main PC at home.

I've run IDL 5.4 (and 5.5b) on W2000(fresh install) since Jan . Like all
versions of windows-IDL I am used to occasional crashes - most seem to
initiate from clicking in the IDE, a very few while code runs. I just
thought this was as good as you could hope for with Win-IDL
I run some montecarlo batch jobs which take upto 7 days and never get
crashes then - so I suspect the IDE event handler in my case.
