Research Systems, Inc., (RSI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kodak, today
announced that it is discontinuing support for several platforms in order to
focus on its core competency platforms, which have the greatest market
share. The company stated that this was a difficult decision to reach and
was only determined after much research and review. This decision was
dictated in large part by the limited number of customers we have using our
products on these platforms, as well as the current economic conditions that
require all companies to make prudent business decisions. This change will
be implemented following the releases of IDL 5.5, scheduled for release
October 4, and ENVI 3.5, planned for October 22, of this year. These will be
the last versions to support the following platforms:

Apple Macintosh
Compaq Alpha Linux
Compaq Alpha Tru64 Unix
Sun Intel x86 Solaris

Although IDL 5.5 will support Mac OS 9, RSI will be unable to release
support for Mac OS X. We had planned to completely rewrite IDL for Mac OS X,
but after careful review of our Macintosh customer base, it has become clear
that our software maintenance fees and predicted sales for Mac OS X would
not cover the costs associated with this effort.

Customers using RSI products on one of these platforms can transfer their
licenses to another supported platform at no additional cost if they are
currently on maintenance. Technical support will continue to be provided to
RSI customers for these platforms. Customers should contact their RSI sales
representative for more information and for assistance in transferring their
licenses.

RSI will continue to support the following platforms:

Sun Solaris
Hewlett-Packard HP-UX
IBM AIX
sgi IRIX
Windows 98, 2000, and NT
Linux

Any questions regarding this policy change may be directed to RSI at
info@rsinc.com.

I have a strong hope that the RSI developers that are unhappy with the
recent events (or those called "former RSI" since a week ago) will join
VNI and blast off the OSX version. Maybe, even DS will joing in and help
resurrect IDL back to what he meant it to be - crossplatform tool for
scientists. Let Kodak have what's left of IDL. I will go to PV-wave if
it can do the same and better.

My goodness. I take a couple of days off and look what hits the fan. It was bad enough when VMS
users were dropped (admittedly with plenty of notice, but I work with folks that still use VMS)
but Macs as well? In a rather abrupt manner, also. My 2-year (so far...and continuing) long
task of replicating my IDL code base in Fortran 90 has, unfortunately, just received a major
push.

I've been away for a few days, so I'm glad to see that the IDL for
Mac/Alpha furor has not completely died down.

I'm still very concerned that all of the platforms on which I run IDL
are not long for this world (Mac and Alpha - dead already; AIX, IRIX,
and Linux - who knows?).

RSI's problem is not a *communication* problem; it's an *integrity*
problem. They said they would do something, people made plans and
spent money, then they changed their minds.

I hate to think that IDL as a product is not economically viable, but
the scientific marketplace may simply be too small. If RSI is unable
to afford to produce a command-line version for Mac OS X (no aqua
interface, just a port to a FreeBSD system) that will be my conclusion.

Does anyone recall being asked about their IDL plans by RSI recently?

I hope it wasn't one of those 5-page e-mail surveys that go directly to
my e-trashcan.
