I wasn't seeing most of those things. In particular, I wasn't seeing
the colored syntax, and couldn't use keyword completion. When I
tried the tutorial that had been posted on the newsgroup, it wouldn't
complete my "endfor" statement. I'll look into this more tomorrow.
Again, thanks for the help.

That's actually the current release, which is a few months old.

The only thing IDLWAVE doesn't do under Windows is run IDL as a sub-process.
All of the editing, keyword/routine completion, syntax coloring, help lookup,
shadow detection, etc. stuff is available, as far as I know. For someone used
to IDLDE, it doesn't have as much of the functionality "up front" (and in your
way). Maybe you need to read the tutorial? That said, you will be happier
playing with it on your Linux box. Certain features rely on interacting with
the IDL shell (such as, "which routines are compiled", etc.).

JD;
Thanks for the older version. I'm trying out IDLWAVE mode on a windows
machine :-( because that's what I have to work on right now. I have a
Linux box elsewhere that I play on as well, and I'm hoping to use it
there in the future. I thought I should get used to it.
But, as I'm trying it out, I'm quickly discovering that under Windows,
it doesn't DO much :-(
I guess that's the price we pay for having a highly integrated GUI
development environment.

This does happen on occassion, but is usually cleared up within a few
hours (I think it's a name server problem). I assure you the site is
still there, and might even sometime soon have a partial workaround for
the lack of true v5.5 manuals within IDLWAVE context help, routine info,
and keyword/routine completion. I see the gap widening.
Try again, and if you still have no luck, try:
http://isc.astro.cornell.edu/~jdsmith/files/
Here you'll find the tarballs for version 4.9.

P.S. GNU Emacs 21 was officially released today, and will offer a
bundled IDLWAVE. While I haven't used it yet, I know there are some
features (like glyph marking of break-point lines), which will work in
IDLWAVE for the first time (at least on GNU Emacs). As always, see
Carsten's site for the latest and greatest.
