Stupid question:

The IDL editor on the Mac 5.4 makes textfiles with the ^M linebreak that shows up when I look at the
file in Unix. Is there a way to get the textfile saved in the "proper" unix format?

Use the Unix command "dos2unix". Check the manpage.
