Why only these two? What are your clients' (if you have them) preferences?

For the same functionality - they're about the same price. (At least last time I checked)

Same dog, different leg IMO. Wrt details, it depends what you want to do.

What sort of libraries? I.e. What sort of problems do you want solved? Both have very extensive
external libraries - and most are free.

If you really are deciding on the future direction of software development in your group, you
really should get an evaluation copy of each and test. You may find that *neither* Matlab not
IDL suits your needs.
