I know of two instructional college courses about IDL taught by
astronomers with online notes and exercises. (Presumably at a beginning
level, most of the material can apply to fields besides astronomy.)
Robert O'Connell (U. of Virginia) has written a guide to IDL for
Astronomers
( http://www.astro.virginia.edu/class/oconnell/astr511/IDLguid e.html)
including exercises for class work.
(
http://www.astro.virginia.edu/class/oconnell/astr511/IDLexer cises/IDL-Exercises-I.html
)
Carl Heiles (UC Berkeley) has written a set of postscript file tutorials
on "Learning IDL
for Astronomy" (
http://www.ugastro.berkeley.edu/tutorials/tutorials.html)

There is also a course on "Programming for Imaging Science" at the
Rochester Institute of Technology http://www.cis.rit.edu/class/simg211/
which is an introduction to Unix and IDL.

Dear Markus,

how much days did your course take? If it's only a day
you should show the idl basics book. This is for the
most beginners enough. If it is well explained
a lot of idl functionality is shown.

regards

Be sure to put little smilely faces after your

I am afraid this is what my poster is gonna look like at AGU in San
Francisco in a week. Given the time I spend reading this NG. But it is
damn addictive :(

Oh, heck, I do it all the time. Piece of cake.
A white board and a magic marker and I'm set. :-)

Cheers,

I wish I had your courage to agree to teach a course next week having no
didactical materials ready :(
I am such a pansy.

All,
Thanks so much for all your replies. Now with these nice tutorials
plus David's book in my hand I am quite optimistic :-). For those who
asked: It's about four afternoons with 3 hours = 12 hours. Most
participants do not know programming. So I'll see how far I can get.

Bye,
Markus
