Dear Emacs users,
It's been more than two years (April 1999) since I took over the Emacs
IDL mode, now called IDLWAVE. After a hot initial phase with a full
overhaul of the entire package, lots of new features added and old
bugs removed, things have slowed down recently. Those of you who have
sent me bug reports or feature requests will have noticed, that reply
and bug-fixing action has been slow if happening at all. This is
certainly an unsatisfactory situation.
On the other hand, a few milestones have been reached. Some weeks ago
Emacs 21 was released with IDLWAVE as an integrated package and the
default mode for all ".pro" files. Most importantly, IDLWAVE made it
into David Fannings marvelous collection of useful IDL tips
(http://www.dfanning.com/misc_tips/idlemacs.html) and even has been
"Tip of the Month"! Now, *that* seems hard to top.
So for two quite different reasons it seems to be about time for me to
resign as maintainer. IDLWAVE will continue to be maintained and
developed, stay tuned for the announcement by the new maintainer soon.
I will still be around, helping to fix things, but also actually using
IDL instead of writing Emacs code.
This whole thing has been great fun and I have certainly learned a
lot. I hope IDLWAVE has been and will continue to be useful to many
people here. Thank you all for your encouragement and feedback.
- Carsten
