Folks,
A friend and IDL programmer (who asked to remain nameless
for reasons that will be obvious in a moment) has left
a nice little Christmas package under my tree this morning.
Using nefarious and sundry means that will go undescribed
(our newsgroup policy, you remember, is Don't Ask, Don't Tell)
he (or she, I guess) has produced what RSI has denied us:
a version of on-line help for IDL 5.5.
This is an HTML file that you can find here:
http://www.dfanning.com/misc_tips/IDLv55HTMLHelp.zip
This is, of course, the second time RSI's customers
have stepped into the breech and provided what IDL so
badly needs. JD Smith has already incorporated a version
of IDL 5.5 help into the wonderful IDLWAVE Emacs mode
editor that he maintains. If you haven't yet seen it,
check it out on the new IDLWAVE web page:
http://www.idlwave.org/
One can only hope that having customers stepping in
like this might be slightly embarrassing to the people
who could do something about it. One could even hope that
in the spirit of Holiday Giving they might come up with
a downloadable HELP file of their own that would make
IDL exceedingly more useful to us.
Cheers,
David
