Take a look at some of David Fanning's programs, especially "pickcolor.pro"
which is a function that produces a modal dialog box and upon hitting "go"
it returns some data. There is a lot of stuff in there but the concept is
pretty simple. From that it isn't much of a step to a non-modal version of
the same.

There are probably better examples out there, but this one worked for me!
