That is the question.

We too will be inconvenienced by this change of policy, as will many
traveling IDL folk who have up until now enjoyed the freedom to carry their
dongle.

I wish RSI would at least publish their reasoning behind this and offer an
alternative solution. I don't mind requesting a temporary key on occasion
but do they really want to issue me 50 keys good for each Saturday and
Sunday of the year so if I decide to work at home on a weekend I can?

why is RSI trying to recall all the HASPs/dongles anyway? (other than
pure corporate greed). HASP security hasn't been cracked, has it? I
used my own money to buy one personal copy of IDL; I have 'demo mode'
IDL on several computers in more than one country, and take the HASP
with me - so only one, licensed, copy of IDL is ever used at any time.
Emailing RSI for new temporary keys to use each computer would be a
nightmare - and I don't want, and can't afford to upgrade at RSI's
whim. IDL5.3 does everything I want, and much more, anyway. This is
like the Mac OSX mess all over again - not good PR. Hope the latest
driver works, thanks... (I haven't access to Windows XP to check yet).

We have one laptop in the lab with XP and at some point we'll want to run
IDL on it licensed with our dongle. I would try getting the latest HASP
driver directly from Aladdin.

This may or may not be the issue but it is probably the only thing we end
users could do.

One reason given to me by an RSI source was that HASP keys cost RSI
USD$200 each.
By disposing of HASP keys, the price of PC licences fell by USD$200.
That's 200 good
reasons, methinks! Actually 400 good reasons here in Australia...

And I must go on record to say that RSI is bending over backwards to
provide
solutions to licence issues at my place of employment since the
withdrawal of most
of our HASP keys in favour of licences keyed to Ethernet card addresses
or PC HD Disk
Serial Numbers or keyed to particular Servers. And it's not every day I
hand RSI a
freebie compliment - ask 'em ;-)

I just bought a new laptop with Window XP in the past
few days, and after downloading and installing the latest
HASP driver from Aladdin had no problems at all running
IDL 5.5.

Cheers,

David
