I don't understand your question. Normally, one solves simultaneous (linear)
equations by matrix operations, which is trivial to do in IDL.

Do loops should be avoided in IDL whenever possible, they slow things down.
Often one can avoid them by using array operations that aren't possible in 3rd
gen. languages like C or Fortran.

Perhaps you can describe your problem more thoroughly.
