At the moment I have to make do with one licence for Windows, for which we
paid about $1500.
If they made the price per site licence more realistic (say $300), guess
how many we'd buy? More than five, so they'd make MORE money!

Five licences are not enough for teaching on the university.
They should make a deal with a campus-license. A very big licence, like the IDL
30-day-trail-licence, but for ever. I think this is a very cheap effective publicity for
IDL, too.
It is not possible for a university to buy 100 licences. So there is only the way to change
to Public Domain-Software, like kohros.

I don't know if they have a page that describes their pricing
options, but I do know that you shouldn't get too hung up
about it. Consumer Reports suggests that most of the time
if you contact a vendor directly and ask them nicely for
their "best deal" that a surprisingly high percentage of the
time you pay a lot less than then listed price.
I'm pretty sure it works for computer software and books, too. :-)
Try info@rsinc.com and ask to speak to Donna. She does a GREAT
job getting good deals for Universities.
Cheers,
David
P.S. I notice a new address for you David. Congratulations!
I've got to think Ithaca has a few more amenities than
Laramie even if the sky isn't as dark. :-)
