The version of OSF/1 on our production machine is still 1.6 so we must
hurry to upgrade it. On a test machine with v2.0 IDL runs fine.

I seem to recall that you need to be running at least OSF/1 version 2.0
on your machine to have the current version of IDL (3.6 or beyond) to
work. I'm guessing that this may be your problem. I'm afraid that the
only solution is to upgrade your operating system to OSF/1 v2.0 or,
preferably, v3.0.
