COMPRESS with OPEN using IDL 5.3 [message #29861]

According to the on-line documentation, I cannot use the COMPRESS
keyword with OPEN *if* I have also set the APPEND keyword. Fine.

My problem is that I cannot use the COMPRESS keyword with OPEN
*if* I have also set the F77_UNFORMATTED keyword.

Can anyone please tell me why this is true?
