I am interested in solving the following problem :

To Automatically detect the surface of a cup from a 3-D image of the
cup stored as a 64x256x256 array. Please refer to my earlier posting
for a description of the cup's orientation. My data is pretty noisy.

Any pointers to automatic edge detection algorithms will be greatly
appreciated. Further, the cup's surface has holes in it. Is there
any way to decide that the cup's wall should have been at these points
even though, the wall does not show up in my original image.

I apologize if I have not explained my problem clearly. Please ask me
questions, and I will try to rephrase.
