There are now a couple of screen shots at the above link under the section
"What Does It Look Like?".

The screen shots demonstrate the usage of the OroborOSX window manager,
which imparts an Aqua look and feel to the window borders. I think that
this window manager is a good choice because it looks pretty nice and is
more consistent with the other windows on your desktop.

You also could use the Motif window manager (mwm) which would make your (X)
window borders be more consistent with the widgets used within the
application, at the obvious expense of being different from the rest of the
desktop. XDarwin uses twm by default and that is what you would get if you
don't install and use mwm or OroborOSX. The good news here is that you get
to choose.

I think IDL has done an excellent job of turning what was a PR
nightmare 2 months ago into very nice FAQ and newsgroup update. It
sounds like this will be quite a neat product. Can the beta testers
release screen-shots, or is that illegal?

As for everyone who said 2 months ago that they and anyone they could
possibly influence would never use IDL again, I hope that a) they will
try this release, and b) if they like it they will let RSI and
everyone they can influence about it know they like it.

I am in the market for a new laptop. I have used *only* Linux/UNIX for
5 years now. I was very interested in Apple using BSD UNIX as their
OS, but was not going to purchase a PowerBook simply because it did
not run IDL. RSIs latest press-release means that I am going purchase
an Apple instead of a PC.

-k.

Looking there I note the following...

Is There A Command Line Version Of IDL On Mac OS X?

Yes. As with all Unix platforms, IDL for Mac OS X can be run as a
stand alone tty based command line program, or with a full
IDE. Furthermore, the command line version should be fully
compatible with the popular emacs idlwave mode.

..and feel envious. If you'd just make an idlwave-compatible,
command-line version for Windows NT/2000/XP, I'd be a happy man!
Well, slightly happier, anyway.
