I don't know about the pvwave. However, you can get idl demo copy from
internet.
gateway.rsinc.com:/pub/idl
boulder.colorado.edu:/pub/idl
lumpi.informatik.uni-dortmund.de:/pub/idl
Look at the README file first.

You can call the PV people at 303-530-9000 or 800-447-7147 to get 45-day
demo versions of both the point-and-click and command line versions of
PV-WAVE. Their address is
Precision Visuals
6260 Lookout Rd
Boulder CO 80301
You can probably get an IDL demo version as well. Contact
RSI, Inc.
777 29th St., Suite 300
Boulder, CO 80303
303-786-9900 (Voice) -9909 (Fax)
We use IDL on the Cosmic Background Explorer project at NASA and are
currently testing out PV-WAVE. They are so similar that it is hard to
state categorically that one is better than the other either for I/O or
anything else. Both run under Motif and can be integrated with C
programs, at least under VMS (I believe that IDL does not support that
under Unix).

Yes it does. I use the IDL CALL_EXTERNAL facility on both a Sun workstation
and on VAX/VMS computers. In fact, I use the same routines on both machines.
However, I wasn't able to use CALL_EXTERNAL on the Sun until I upgraded to
SunOS 4.1.1. Apparently, it depends upon how up to date your operating system
is with the current UNIX standard. (SunOS 4.1.1 required a Sun patch to make
it work. SunOS 4.1.2 works without any patches.)
