I'm rather new to IDL so my question may be trivial:

if given from the IDL-prompt interactively: plot,[-1,4],[0,0] results
in a plotwindow with xaxis from -1 to 4 and yaxis from 0 to 1

Q1: where does this 1 in the yaxis come from ?

This command is also given somewhere deep in an application I am asked
to debug and there is exits with an error: % PLOT:Data range for axis
has zero length.

Q2: why does it work interactively and not in batch ?
