I suggest you raise this with Research Systems tech support. They are
always happy to receive bug reports and feature requests. Though I
suspect that their response will be to amend the documentation so that
it notes the limitations you have pointed out.

Use a tool like ImageMagick's convert to turn your PNGs into a format
that IDL handles better?
