OK sorry for exessive posting. But if I do
uniq([1,2,3,4,5,6], 1)
I just get an error
IDL> uniq([1,2,3,4,5,6], 1)

uniq([1,2,3,4,5,6], 1)
^
% Syntax error.
if do now
IDL> b = uniq([1,2,3,4,5,6], 1)
% Compiled module: UNIQ.
the assignment works without crashing IDL (as it does if issued as the
first command in a fresh IDL session).
But just look at this
IDL> print, uniq([1,2,3,4,5,6], 1)
0
the original offensive command works.

With IDL Version 5.5 Win32 (x86) under windows 2000 professional (german
language versuion, SP2) this command "crashes" IDL. (Even the assignment
b = unig([1,2,3,4,5,6], 1) makes this version of IDL go boink. But I
only tested this after testing your offensive command without a clean
restart, so there might be something unsane left from the first crash)

I get the same behavior, both on Linux and Solaris, more precisely:
{ x86 linux unix linux 5.5a Feb 7 2002 32 32}
{ sparc sunos unix Solaris 5.5 Aug 28 2001 64 64}
