I recall being very confused when an American friend used "snipe hunt" to mean
a hunt for a mythical beast, a chase after something that doesn't exist,
a waste of time etc. I presume that is how David is using it here. However
in Europe the snipe is a real bird and I think that people may once have
hunted them. They would be very hard to hit on account of their low, fast,
ziz-zag flight, mind you.

It is likely that the files are in IDL's "save" format and the original
poster _may_ need nothing more than to be told to read up on the restore
command.
