Hi David--
I've certainly wanted something like this myself. In fact I've wished
that IDL provided native access to the compression routines that it
has built in.
However, are you sure that the "gzip" DLM that you mentioned cannot
decompress "compressed" files? I know that the Unix gzip command is
able to do this, so perhaps the library is smart enough.
