I'm working on an IDL function which does just that. If you
have any special requests (e.g., for little-used image organizations
or pixel data types, function input/output), let me know. The initial
version, to be finished any day now, will at least read byte and
half-word images, and properly handle (but ignore) binary labels
and binary record prefix bytes (keywords NLB and NBB).
On the other hand, if you find out about any robust and flexible
IDL code that already exists for reading VICAR image files, let me
know that, too. ;-)
