lmgrd it's not the only way to license rhe product there are some more
posibilities.

I'm not particularly in 'in the know', but I won't let that stop
me from chimming in! FWIW, RSI has also released their
(commercial, not student) Watsyn product for Windows only. From
what I understood, they are aiming at the windows market and,
although they aren't cutting *nix supportfrom IDL, their focus is
on windows and *nix comes later if at all for watsyn and other
newer products. That's too bad, because I know we'd jump on
watsyn for our research and on the student idl for our grad
students, iff they were available for *nix, linux and sun in
particular.

I hope that is indeed the case. My only concern is that none of the *nix
versions have been released for students. Given the idl license manager
for *nix is a commercial product I suspect there are licensing costs and
this may be the root cause. I certainly hope this isn't a large
impediment and that some arrangement can be found.

I couldn't agree more. I would like to add that I hope:
(1) there isn't a CD-ROM coded license (like the student edition of
Matlab)
(2) the student version is upgraded and released simultaneously with the
real versions
(3) a reasonably priced upgrade is made available to each student when a
new version is released.

I believe the intention is to add a Mac version when the OS X version of
IDL is released (or shortly thereafter). Can't tell you about Linux,
though.
I compliment them on setting a reasonable price and *not* restricting
the functionality.

Can someone 'in the know' please tell me if Linux or OS X support will be
added at a later date? It seems almost every commercial vendor is
pandering their student software to windows users only (as a Mac/Linux
user, this is a real shame). I am, nevertheless, happy to see a students
who run windows will finally be able to purchase and use legitimate copies
of IDL.
