I put a little routine named BURN_IN on my web
page:
ftp://ftp.dfanning.com/pub/dfanning/outgoing/misc/burn_in.pr o
Use it like this to "burn in" any word (or phase) on any 2D or 3D image:
filename = Filepath(Subdir=['examples','data'], 'rose.jpg')
Read_JPEG, filename, image
modifiedImage = Burn_In(image, 'Coyote')
TV, modifiedImage, True=1
Should give you a couple of ideas.
This will also require FSC_Color from the Coyote Library to
run correctly:

Cheers,
David

I'm afraid you are out of luck if your requirements
insist on not using any graphics commands at all. ;-)
If you just don't want a window, however, I'd use
XYOUTS in either a pixmap window or the Z graphics
buffer.
