Abstract
The book contains an introduction to the programming language IDL,
version 5.5. The IDL scripting language itself, working within the IDL
development environment and important visualation routines are
introduced. The book adresses novices to programming as well as
experienced IDL programmers.
The focus of this book is on nuts and bolts problems arising in the
natural sciences, and their solutions. The special characteristics and
possibilities of array-orientated programming are pointed out. Important
language elements and hints are highlighted.
More than a hundred complete programming examples, of which are several
described in the book, are accesible at the URL

These examples encourage use as a playground for autodidactical IDL studies.
A clear organisation and the use of up-to-date, structured langugage
