You may find maps of reasonable resolution in the CIA World map database.
It contains coastlines, rivers and political bounderies. A 0.5 degree
DEM is also there.
We got it via anonymous ftp from ftp.sma.ch (Switzerland).
Maps are stored in XDR format, an IDL demo program is included.
I guess there are places in the States where you can access the data
directly.

me know.
