I was contacted by email in mid November- you can send email to
survey@rsinc.com to request a form and/or send your own comments and
suggestions.
The survey prompted for the contact people to freely forward to IDL users for
their feedback as well as the contact's feedback.

I didn't hear about this, but at the time of our last upgrade here, I
wasn't the contact person. If I want to put my $0.02 in, who do I need
to send an e-mail to?

RSI distributed email to the contact people with current licenses (at
least, with a note inviting the principal users) to contribute to this
survey that is suppose to help RSI define its vision for the future.
Included in this survey was a question that asked which platforms do you
wish to see an IDL port- Included was Linux, Solaris for Intel, BSD (as
I recall), among other platforms.
IMHO, RSI would make a good move to market IDL for Linux to students,
with an affordable price scheme. After school- New Place- New
Non-Linux platform (most likely) and software to accompany at retail
costs. Seems to be the attitude of many of the software companies.
(National Instruments is releasing nearly full function, from my
understanding, student version of Lab View. Microsoft, from my
experience, offers generous discounts to educational institutions and
there are others-).

I talked to the RSI representatives (the guys who bring you IDL) this
last spring at a Solar Physics meeting in Baltimore. I wanted them to
port their stuff to a FreeBSD box. The response I got was that for the
price I paid for my machine (with the extra ram, the nice monitor and
the video card) I could darn near get a real workstation that is
supported by RSI.
That was hard to counter, I paid $5K at the time for my machine. I was
also led to believe if there was a market for it, they would probably be
willing to port their stuff to another platform. Are there many other
people out there interested in this, considering the large price tag
associated with IDL?
