In addition

there is a movie player package mplayer for linux available which is
able to play nearly all kind of movie files.

You find it on freshmeat or sourceforge.

Most platforms should have some sort of viewer installed by default.
Windows has Windows Media Player, Mac OS has Quicktime viewer, and the
various flavors of Unix and Linux should have a proprietary package or Xanim
either already installed or easily obtained precompiled.

All should be able to play MPEG-1 files. If you are creating MPEG-2 files
you'll want to test them with these players first. I know that Windows
Media Player has problems with MPEG-2 files but I am unsure about Quicktime
and Xanim.
