Hi Folks,
I just got my IDL 5.6 version installed and the first thing
that caught my eye was contour labeling for object graphics
contour plots. Hooray!
Of course, half the labels are upside down, but at least
we have something to work with now. And, heck, it's easy
enough to rotate the contour plot in object graphics so
you can read the labels without breaking your neck. :-)
Cheers,
David
P.S. Let's just say I didn't read about ALL the keywords.
I'm sure there is something in here that fixes this little
problem. :-)

Now that's funny! :-)
As long as this newsgroup is becoming a blog today,
here is an article that someone called to my attention
with this comment, "The [author's] conclusion (which I
can certainly attest to) is that as time goes on,
it becomes harder and harder to be a programmer, and
not easier as you might expect."

I certainly find this true when programming with objects!
Cheers,
David

Pavel, have you seen this spoof
http://www.fandango.net/switched.mov
of the "Switcher" commercial where the long-time Mac user says "I
switched my Mac to OS X, and it's, like, where the f**k did my Mac go!"
;-)
If your OS 9 Mac is really stable, don't switch. In my case, however,
OS X has been hugely more stable. It's a treat to have two IDL jobs
crunching away full-speed in the background on a dual-processor Mac and
see *no* impact on the user interface or the 15 other apps I have
running all the time. I don't use idlde, but it runs fine if you want
to. Mac interface plus all the unix goodies (NFS, shell scripts, etc.)
I used the OS X version in our undergrad lab this fall with 50 computer
novices. Machines were very stable and I had few problems.

Good luck. I am *not* messing up my perfectly stable Mac to run OsX just
to be able to put the XWindows version of IDL on it. If I were to go
down that crooked path, I'd rather set up Linux. If it was the native
version, now *that* would be a different story...
I am afraid my code will become more and more obsolete from this point
on :-(
Cheers,
Pavel
