I am using this structure :
mt = {version:1., $
datastart:0L, $
delimiter:0b, $
missingvalue:!values.f_nan, $
commentsymbol:'', $
fieldcount:[1l], $
fieldtypes:7, $
fieldnames:'field1', $
fieldlocations:0l, $
fieldgroups:[0]}
aa = read_ascii(filnam, template = mt)
to read ascii data with the idl reading routine. May be that helps.
