I was waiting to install 10.2.3, and I think I'll wait some more
--until I hear that you've been able to make IDL work!

In the above, do you mean that you've cd'd into
/Applications/idl_5.6/bin/
and typed "idl" and it's "not found"?
When you "ls" the directory are idl and idlde even there?

With my first installation on 10.2.2, it took me a while to get
all of my idl_setup / idl_startup and path variables set
up, but it was just like any other typical UNIX joy.

If you _do_ get it working, please post again saying what the
problem was.

So I am not entirely sure what happened but I seemed to have gotten it
working.

When I installed 5.6 initally I had installed it from downloading the
files from RSI's web site. Hence the problems. However this morning I
deleted all the idl files and installed it from the cd. No problems at
all! Seems like it just might have something to do with the version I
downloaded or something happened along the way.

It is now working just fine under 10.2.3 - at least so far.
