dialog_pickfile and the 'file' keyword

I have an application where the users regularly need to save
results and would like to use the input file name to help specify
the output file names. For example, if the input came from
'foo.img', I use that to set the file keyword in dialog_pickfile
to 'foo.roi'. That works until the user changes the directory
with dialog_pickfile. Changing the directory removes the initial
file selection. The same happens if the user types in a file
name and then selects a new directory.
Does anyone know a way to make the dialog_pickfile file selection
stick as the user navigates the directory tree? Are there any
other widgets out there that would do that for me?
