strmatch in idl versions earlier than 5.3 [message #33877]

I am looking for a replacement for the built-in routine strmatch
introduced in IDL5.3. (Specifically I want to use R. Bauer's
icg/idl_source/idl_work/rb_lib/strmatch2.pro, which calls strmatch.)

There is a strmatch in the esrg library but it doesn't have the same
functionality (arrays, mainly).

(We have current maintenance but have idl running on various linuxes
that collect data in real time, and upgrading the linux kernels just in
order to be able to run more recent idl versions is not an attractive
option.)
