Is PDF the only help option in 5.6? [message #34003] Tue, 11 February 2003 06:48 Go to next message

I really dislike using Acrobat Reader to browse help in IDL now. Is
there an option to get the old hyperlinked help back(last version
before this I used was 5.3)? It was just a quicker, easier to use
interface I feel. Everyone of my users has complained about this also.

Thanks for any tips.

You can see /usr in the Finder using "Go to Folder..." in the Go menu.

The magic incantation to make all unix files visible in the Finder is

defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

at a terminal prompt. This makes all "dot" files visible, including
some Mac-only clutter that would be better off left invisible. To turn
it off use the same command with NO at the end.

I keep meaning to write an AppleScript to toggle this with a button
click.

Two problems:

1) the pdf files are all in /usr which means I can't see them from the
Finder.
2) I copied those pdf files to my desktop, and lo and behold they were
acrobat files on my desktop. Weird, huh?

Select a PDF file. Do "Get Info". Under "Open with", change the
application to Acrobat Reader, then click the button to change the
default application for all PDF files.

No, I don't think so -- but I remember having problems with print preview
the last time I fooled around with the PDF problems (my print previews
started showing up in Preview, not in Acrobat) -- how did you modify this
setting?

I don't have this problem. Have you set the default tool to open PDF
files as Acrobat on your system?

Has anyone had a problem with the MacOS X version of IDL/ENVI opening those
PDFs in Preview (which does not support hyperlinking, or other Acrobat
features)? I can't get it to stop doing this, so it makes the help nearly
useless for me unless I copy the help files to my desktop and run them
manually...

"Non-existent backwards compatibility"? "Probably many other functions"?

Yeah right.
