The Center for Neutron Research at the National Institute of Standards
and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD is seeking candidates for a
position as a Software Engineer.

The software engineer (SE) will work closely with a team of scientists
and other developers on a project called DAVE (the Data Analysis and
Visualization Environment), a comprehensive suite of interactive
programs written for the casual neutron spectroscopist. The SE will be
responsible for developing applications for the reduction,
visualization, and analysis of neutron scattering data based on the
needs of the scientific staff. Knowledge of neutron scattering
techniques is not required but would be a plus.

Required skills

� At least 5 years experience programming in a high-level language
� B.S. in physics, chemistry, biology, computer science or related
scientific discipline
� At least one year IDL* programming experience
� Strong creative and analytical problem-solving
� Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both in
person and in writing
� Ability to work independently and as a team member
� Ability to interact effectively with a variety of technical
personnel

The following qualifications would be a plus

� Experience with application development with GUIs
(graphical-user-interfaces) in IDL*
� Experience in developing programs for the reduction, visualization,
and/or analysis of multi-dimensional spectroscopic data
� Working knowledge of object-oriented programming
� Experience reducing and analyzing neutron scattering spectra
� M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, biology, computer science or
related scientific discipline
