I too thank VNI for their effort to give Linux a try with this trial period.
We have done some things with this trial version, so far it behaves as expected.
I intend to give VNI feedback after I give this port a good "workout" :-)
Thanks again, VNI, for monitoring the discussions on this newsgroup and
responding to the users in such a timely manner.

I have to say, I'm astounded at the rather cool reaction this
announcement seems to be getting. I thought an offer to try out
PV-Wave for nothing for 2 1/2 months would warrant some kind
words, to say the least. Coupled with the fact that, if you
already own a PC and have enough disk space, you can try this
system out for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (i.e. Linux is also free),
I would have thought this is something worth shouting for
joy about!
The big question in my mind is whether VNI intend to eventually
charge their PC price ($700?) for this or whether they will charge
the full workstation price. If the former, it would be a good
reason to move to Linux on a PC with PV-Wave as opposed to IDL
for Windows - it would be cheaper and better and at home!
Anyway, IDL already exists for PowerPC in native version, which
I agree, is also a good thing.
Thanks very much, VNI, and I hope the trial period is a success.
Matthew

I am very interested in this announcement. However... I currently use IDL and make
use of the ASTRON library of routines, particularly the FITSIO stuff. Can anyone
tell me if the ASTRON routines (in IDL, of course) will run with no or little modification
under PV-WAVE?

You're right with respect to the 'real'(?) PC's where Linux is a good
choise to replace MS-DOS or other stone-aged Microsoft Products. To
my information up to now there are only PowerPC's with MAC OS 7.5
available and that's what I ment.
There have been some postings about speed comparision of IDL on
MAC and on SUN-Sparcstations. These results would be similar for
PV-Wave. And if you look at the price differences of SUN-Sparc
and MAC-PowerPC's and if you don't need the whole 'power' of UNIX
all the time than a PowerPc is a serious candidate for your work.

And would be a good thing for Pv-Wave too !
