XCONTOUR is getting a little long of tooth these days.
It is due a good going over to get it up to date with
some of the new features of IDL. But, in any case, I
doubt a time axis is on the immediate horizon.

I think you are going to have to fool around with the
XTICKFORMAT keyword to IDLgrAXIS to get what you are
looking for. :-)
