Hi Jagadeesan,

You might check out the Interactive Wavelet page, at:
http://paos.colorado.edu/research/wavelets

There, you will find *free* IDL code for computing and visualizing the
wavelet power spectrum. There is also an interactive part where you can
paste in your time series and have it do everything for you.

IDL also has a build-in wavelet tool (wv_applet), but you have to get a
license. Unfortunately, I do not know how much it is.

You should start with Practical IDL programming by Liam E Gumley followed by
IDL programming techniques by David Fanning, in that order ( I could make no
sense of the Dr. Fannings book till I read the first one :) ).
As always GOOGLE and this newsgroup are good resources.
