I'm evaluating IDL for some work we're doing, and am finding some
apparent holes in the functionality. Our work involves automated and
semi-automated image segmentation and measurement - using one spectral
band to segment data objects (an identifier) and other bands to measure
them.
What I'm lacking are binary shape measurement functions: size,
perimeter to area, sphericity, length vs. width, axis of orientation, hole
count, etc.. These have been useful in other packages I've used, but I
haven't found anything like that in IDL yet. If present they would be very
effective in filtering blobs into object and non-object categories. Can
anybody give me some pointers?
On a second subject: some of my users are on Macs, and the GUI looks
non-standard. In particular, there are a profusion of menus, the main menu
bar is not accessible for modification, and sliders are _very_ non-Mac.
What kind of feedback have people received regarding these deviations from
the Mac GUI?
