yes, i have envi and i know the raster-vector tool there. but is there
any possibility to get this rtv_doit procedure into my own idl code?

If you have ENVI, you can use rtv_doit, or just do it through the menu
(Vector>Raster to Vector). I don't know of anything within IDL itself
to do it, though.

I don't know of any such thing for IDL. (But then, I don't know much.
IDL does have a lot of image tools.)

I have used raster->vector software outside IDL. The results were terrible.

Why do you want to do this? Is there any further info you can give that
might help people answer your question.

As long as your IDL code is running within the ENVI environment, you
can use it all you want. But if you try to run your code in IDL
launched by itself, it won't run.
